Imagine someone walking into a crowded room and instantly mapping the emotional temperature of every single person there. They are the ultimate caretaker: rapidly anticipating needs, smoothing over friction, flawlessly adapting to whatever the group requires. It may look like extreme empathy or a rare social skill; it is a deeply ingrained survival mechanism — an intense radar built early on to guarantee safety and keep relational connection at any cost.
Yet ask this person a simple question — "How do you feel right now?" "What do you want?" — and the mind goes completely blank. To survive the past, keeping the peace meant systematically silencing their own desires; the internal voice was pushed down so consistently that the sense of self entirely disappeared. This "no I" state we call the fetal stage: internal reality equals zero.
The traditional approach seats them across from a certified expert in a formal top-down setting. For the caretaker, that vertical architecture is itself a threat, instantly triggering survival instincts: hypervigilance reads the expert, quickly figures out what the person in charge wants to hear, and flawlessly performs the perfectly healed patient. A feelings questionnaire in this setting is useless — a person who has completely erased their "I" cannot feel that the "I" is missing. No one can be assessed into finding a self; the hierarchical environment reinforces the very pressure that forces them to hide.
To break the cycle, the hierarchy is entirely dismantled: the vertical setup is replaced by a perfectly flat circle. The new ecosystem is built with exactly four strict equals — two care teammates and two runners. We call this Leader to Leader (L2L): no experts, no followers, no top-down verdicts. With no authority figure in the room to please, the caretaker's chameleon-like defense has nothing to latch onto — no audience, no performance. This horizontal circle of peers is the necessary prerequisite for reaching past a chronic people-pleaser's trauma responses.
Once formed, the group works through the material together while deliberately avoiding direct questions about inner feelings — those only make the runner freeze. The group works from the outside in, focusing on highly functional, observable daily behaviors: constantly anticipating others' needs, tending someone else's bad mood, smiling while secretly angry. Examining these concrete reactions together, the runner slowly recognizes their own ingrained defense patterns. Tracking external habits provides a safe map — tracing the outline of emotional suppression without the paralyzing pressure of having to feel it first.
Eventually the runner hits the critical friction point: staring at the material, freezing, admitting they have no idea how to answer. The care teammate offers no correction and no probing — they simply "add one," sharing their own past of going numb and blank before the same questions, anchoring the runner in shared vulnerability. This is "four people, five legs": a strict commitment that the whole group paces itself to the slowest member, so no one is ever left alone. The shared pacing proves through action that acceptance in this circle requires no perfect performance and no complete answers.
要從舊經濟走進新經濟,小組陪跑者問一個根基性、常令人害怕的問題:「我受得起嗎?」What the group dismantles is the runner's entire survival economy. The old system is a transactional loop of Doing→Being: worth purchased by constantly fixing things. The new system runs on grace, fully reversed: Being→Doing — existence itself guarantees worth, received freely as a gift. To cross between the two economies, the group walks with the runner into one foundational, often terrifying question: "Am I worthy to receive this?"
At last the runner experiments with dropping the high functioning: they stop managing the group's emotions to see what remains. When the performing stops, the peers stay — no judgment, no corrections, only unconditional presence. For the first time the runner experiences being helpless without being abandoned. The grace economy becomes lived reality. Only within this unbreakable four-person peer architecture can the central heart of stone — once a brilliant and necessary survival tool — finally soften into a heart of flesh, able to truly feel its own existence.
36:26–27"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and bring it about that you walk in My statutes, and are careful and follow My ordinances." — Ezekiel 36:26–27 (NASB)
