This one, I loved. In "Love, Dates & Heartbreaks," Andy Stanley names something almost everyone has lived through — one relationship ends, the next one begins, and somewhere along the way it starts looking just like the last one.
Two lines stopped us. First: "Your direction, not your intention, determines your destination." Second — he says this is the hardest thing to convince anyone of — "Time is your friend."
Where the stakes are low, we're quick to examine ourselves. In relationships — where it actually matters — we rarely stop to ask if we're walking the same direction again.
Three assumptions we never examined
He names three assumptions that quietly run our decisions: experience makes you wiser (he says it only makes you older, unless it's evaluated); knowing right from wrong means you'll do right (knowing and having the power to act are different things); and time is against you (the hardest one to let go of, he says — as if every year moves you further from being okay).
What time gives isn't waiting — it's the ability to see
He says the truth is the opposite — time is your friend. Not because time automatically makes anyone better, but because time and a pause let you hear what you can't hear right now, see what you can't see right now, even own what you can't yet own. Without that pause, most of us are left with one thing: blame. He says blame doesn't walk anyone into a better future — it just carries whatever's unresolved into the next relationship.
Regret and resolve aren't enough
He says something very direct: "regret and resolve just aren't enough." What he points to next is the sequence Paul writes in Romans 12: don't be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind — like repainting a car; if you don't sand off the old finish first, the new coat just peels off.

Scripture
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:1-2)
This path through Jesus — to rebuild our attachment with the Heavenly Father — is the foundation beneath everything we know and do.
