He says when a choice leaves even a small hesitation in the conscience, that's the moment to stop and notice the tension — not sell yourself on it, listen to it.
We rarely have to sell ourselves
He says we rarely have to sell ourselves on a good idea — if something requires repeatedly explaining to ourselves why it's okay, that repeated explaining may itself be the tension speaking.
The stories we tell ourselves
In the same series, he tells the story of a young man raised in a wealthy family whose fortune was lost through his father's poor decisions. Growing up hearing his mother blame his father, the young man concluded: I don't understand money, I'm not a money person. He grew up to become exactly that — until the day he realized his father's mistake was never his own story to carry, and he was willing to rewrite it. Today he manages money well.
That leaves us asking ourselves: is there a story we inherited from someone else that we've been living out as if it were our own truth?
The wise voices around us
He closes with a story from 1 Kings: after Solomon's death, his son Rehoboam is about to become king. The elders who served his father advise him to lighten the burden on the people, in exchange for their willing service; the young men he grew up with urge him to make it heavier instead. Rehoboam listens to the young men — and the people reject him on the spot. The kingdom splits.
He says the point of the story isn't that Rehoboam had bad luck — it's that he had surrounded himself only with people who needed him, or wanted something from him. The elders who actually knew Solomon, and knew the blind spots Rehoboam couldn't see in himself, had no place at his table.
That reminds us: a person rarely can't hear the tension — more often, no one around them has been given permission to say it out loud. That's exactly what we believe: we often need the people around us in order to see the tension in ourselves clearly.
If there's something today you keep explaining to yourself, stop and tell someone — don't process it all the way through alone.
