He says: "The most difficult person to lead is the person in the mirror."
Imagine your own funeral
He says at 31 he did an exercise: imagining his own funeral, writing what he'd want his spouse, children, and friends to say — it took him two or three mornings, and he narrowed it down to seven adjectives that haven't changed in thirty years. None of the seven relate to what he owns or earns — all relate to character; they've become the boundary of his behavior, and when he crosses one, he refuses to call it "a mistake" — he insists on calling it "failure."
Actively inviting correction
He says the third of three commitments is not trying to get away with things — actively inviting the people who report to him to speak the truth and raise objections. He openly admits that a power gap really exists; he has "a relationship, but not the same relationship" with those under him, without pretending it's fully equal.
That leaves us asking ourselves a question: he admits the power gap is real and simply chooses to invite correction anyway. We don't have his kind of hierarchy — so are we, in fact, more likely to forget that whether or not there's a power gap, being open to correction is always a choice someone has to actively make?
The first thing standing side by side has to face is ourselves
The most difficult person to lead is the person in the mirror" pushes us one step further: we often say we walk side by side with no one leading — but this line reminds us that the first person we have to face on that road is ourselves, not how well the other person is walking.
His definition of failure — leaving one's own values, regardless of outcome — reminds us of a gap we often name: the distance between knowing what to do and actually doing it. Whether that gap shows up in him or in us, it deserves to be honestly named. That's a layer we've added ourselves, not something he said.
Write down three adjectives today — words you hope the people closest to you would use for your character, not your achievements.

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)
Inviting correction means putting yourself into the position of being sharpened, on purpose, without waiting for someone else to make the first move.
