She says a student who had once been incarcerated joked with her using math, calculating out a crime step by step. She tried a word of caution to talk him out of it — and his reply left her without an answer.
That leaves us asking ourselves a question: when the point we came prepared with gets caught by the other person and handed straight back to us, are we willing to admit that we're still learning too?
Your hardest student
She says that moment brought back something her mother used to say: "Your hardest student will become your best teacher."
That pushes us one step further: whether someone is willing to be taught by the hardest person in the room may matter more than how many people they can teach.
Wealth, not the reward of sacrifice
She says it took her years to understand this — she considers herself a rich person, not necessarily in money, but in a richness that education work gives her, one money can't buy.
The richness she describes reminds us that fullness isn't a reward earned through sacrifice — it's the mark left on us after walking alongside someone, being changed ourselves along the way. That's a layer we've added ourselves, not something she said.
Think today of someone who was hard to deal with — what did they teach you, and have you ever thanked them for it?

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)
The one doing the sharpening often assumes they're the blade — until the moment they realize they're also the iron being sharpened.
