She says that at nineteen, she began teaching in a U.S. youth prison, for nearly three years. On her first day, her students asked her only two questions: do you have a boyfriend, and — why did you come?
Two years later, they stopped asking
She says they asked that question every week for two years. Until one day, writing on the board with her back turned, she suddenly felt a chill — they hadn't asked.
That leaves us asking ourselves a question we can't easily answer: if someone kept asking us "why did you come," could we stand two years without an answer that satisfied them?
Jackie The principal, and Jackie
She says the principal found one student too much trouble and left him in the corner of the classroom, unmanaged; a teacher named Jackie instead swung with him on the playground every day after school and stayed until his homework was done before letting him go home.
The principal's "too much trouble" is handling someone from above; Jackie staying every day is a different shape entirely — not handling a problem student, but standing beside a child.
Motive matters more than method
She says technique and method are peripheral — what matters most is the relationship built with a student. If the motive disappears, no amount of good technique or theory helps.
Jackie's story leaves us asking three questions of ourselves: how long are we willing to show up every day? Are we willing to understand first, instead of rushing to hand over our own answer? Are we willing to let a child start doing homework on their own, instead of forcing it?
Why did you come" pushes us one step further: when someone stops asking, it doesn't mean the question disappeared — it means they've finally dared to trust you'll stay long enough to hear the answer. That's a layer we've added ourselves, not something she said.
Give someone five extra minutes today — not to solve their problem, just so they know you'll still be there.

Quoted from Anting Liu's 2014 udn talks address, "Give Yourself a Reason to Take a Risk."
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." (1 John 4:18)
She herself closes with this verse — when "why did you come" is finally answered with love, fear has nowhere left to stay.
