You don't smile because conditions are met. You smile, and only then do the conditions come.
She says that when she was eleven, two days before a planned trip abroad, her mother found a lump — cancer. Every plan was cancelled; her mother went into surgery, then chemo. It was her first time facing real fear, with no idea what to do.
On the first day of seventh grade, all fifty-five of her classmates told her, on the same day, that they'd decided not to be her friend anymore. Her grades fell. The only one left she was still willing to talk to was Jesus.
That leaves us remembering something often forgotten: the spikes a person grows aren't usually born in them — they're what's left when no one could get close, and holding on alone was the only option.

Smile first, then the conditions come

She says the Cambodian tuk-tuk driver survived the Khmer Rouge genocide — his whole family was executed in front of him. And he told her: you don't smile because conditions are met. You smile, and only then do the conditions come.
That leaves us asking an uncomfortable question: how long is our own list of "I'll smile once conditions are met"? What are we waiting for, before we're willing to take the first step ourselves?

Do you love the gift, or the giver

A pastor in a post-earthquake Haitian medical tent asked her: do you love the gift, or the giver of the gift?
She says love is seeing your own responsibility in someone else's need — that pushes us one step further: responsibility isn't assigned to you, it grows out of first seeing the need.

Despair is contagious, but so is hope

She says despair is contagious — but so is hope, and so is courage. Her fear at eleven facing her mother's cancer, and the slow process of losing her spikes in seventh grade, sit on the same road as this line: it isn't knowledge that grows a person up — it's staying soft while being broken open.

Smile once today, before the conditions are met — see if the conditions actually start to come.

Scripture

(羅馬書 5:3-5) "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit." (Romans 5:3-5)
The tuk-tuk driver smiling first, the Haitian pastor's question, her own age eleven and seventh grade — they're all saying the same thing: faith doesn't wait until the pain stops. It's chosen while the pain is still there.
