She says "becoming an adult" doesn't mean turning eighteen, or receiving some certificate of adulthood.
She means breakdowns — being publicly torn apart by classmates, abandoned by a seemingly perfect boyfriend, wanting to quit at the lowest point of building something. And, every time, choosing again whether to believe.
Believing before you can see
In her second year of high school, she went to a summer program at Stanford. There she met students her own age with completely different ideas — that you didn't have to declare a major in your first two years of college, that you could keep exploring, that your major didn't have to decide your future career. Professors encouraged them to make mistakes, treating mistakes as a normal part of learning.
She says she'd never imagined you could be encouraged to make mistakes — for a kid raised inside Taiwan's education system, that was a real shock.
Believing before you can see is a choice" — worth pausing on. We often wait until we can see before we dare believe. But the believing she describes is choosing before the seeing.
You are not the point
She says the line that pulled her back, at the lowest point, said by a friend in front of the hippo enclosure at the zoo, hit hardest: "You are not the point — the point is the teammates you promised to lead."
That wasn't comfort. It was calling her back to her own commitment — not encouragement handed down from above, but a peer directly pulling her back to her own words, pushing her to stand, not carrying her.
Puzzle — not a coincidence we grafted on
Puzzle" is the word we had already chosen for ourselves — we didn't like how old-fashioned "column" sounded, so we started calling each person's chapter a puzzle piece. Her talk happens to carry the same title, "puzzle" — we didn't graft that on. She said it first, on her own: life assembled piece by piece, trusting the picture before you can see it finished.
She assembles her own life, piece by piece. On our own road, we often place that same puzzle into a group of hands — believing together, assembling together. That's a layer we've added ourselves.
The weight of the environment
The Stanford camp pushes us one step further: an environment that allows exploring and allows mistakes grows a different person than one that only allows first place. Whether a person can grow the courage to explore has a lot to do with the environment around them — that's something we care about, and want to keep building, ourselves.
Ask yourself today: am I waiting until I can see before I believe, or am I willing to choose first?
Say something today to someone at the edge of a breakdown — not comfort, but a reminder of what they've already promised.
